Background of the study
Globalization has profoundly impacted language use, introducing new syntactic trends and altering traditional structures. In Lagos, Nigerian English, especially among professionals, reflects the influence of global communication practices. This study investigates how globalization affects sentence complexity, focusing on changes in clause structure, subordination, and syntactic embedding. Professionals in Lagos are increasingly exposed to international media, business communication, and digital platforms, which encourage the adoption of complex sentence constructions to convey nuanced ideas (Ogun, 2023). Research indicates that exposure to global linguistic models can lead to both simplification and innovation in sentence structure (Adebola, 2024). The study will analyze written and spoken communications in professional settings to examine how globalization contributes to modifications in syntactic complexity. It will also explore the balance between retaining local linguistic identity and embracing global influences, highlighting the dynamic evolution of Nigerian English (Chukwu, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite globalization’s pervasive influence, limited empirical research has addressed its effects on sentence complexity in Nigerian English among professionals in Lagos. Preliminary observations suggest that global communication trends lead to more intricate sentence structures, which may enhance clarity or introduce ambiguities (Uche, 2023). The lack of systematic analysis hampers efforts to optimize professional communication. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining syntactic changes influenced by globalization.
Objectives of the study

  • To analyze changes in sentence complexity among Lagos professionals using Nigerian English.
  • To assess the influence of global communication trends on syntactic structures.
  • To propose recommendations for improving professional communication through optimized syntax.
    Research questions
  • What changes in sentence complexity are observable due to globalization?
  • How do global linguistic models influence syntactic constructions among professionals?
  • What strategies can balance local linguistic identity with global influences?
    Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the impact of globalization on the syntactic complexity of Nigerian English in professional contexts. The findings will inform language educators, business communicators, and policymakers on harnessing global influences while maintaining clarity and cultural relevance, thereby deepening our understanding of language evolution in a globalized world (Olufemi, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to examining the effect of globalization on sentence complexity in Nigerian English among professionals in Lagos. It does not extend to other language varieties or professional groups outside Lagos.
    Definitions of terms
  • Globalization: The process of increased interconnectedness and cultural exchange on a global scale.
  • Sentence Complexity: The intricacy of sentence structure, including subordination and syntactic embedding.
  • Nigerian English: The localized variety of English spoken in Nigeria, featuring distinct syntactic and lexical characteristics.
